Meet the team - Clare Watters

This Month, we introduce you to Clare Watters, the BEECP Project Support Officer.

What is your favourite thing about working for the BEE project?

The team is great! I am learning a lot and having fun in the role, because everyone is very knowledgeable and friendly.

What is your background in energy efficiency/environment?

In my last role I worked for a local authority within the facility management team identifying and implementing initiatives to save money and reduce utility spends. My career started at the charity PECT back in 2007, working with businesses and providing advice implementing Environmental Management Systems and associated environmental initiatives. I have also worked for Waterwise, providing water-efficiency advice relating to new developments.

What would your best piece of advice be to businesses?

Monitor your utilities. Look at month-by-month usage and take meter readings when the business is closed, such as overnight or over weekends. Utility use should remain fairly steady over the years (fluctuations may occur seasonally or after an increase or decrease in output by the business) and there should be minimal utility usage while the business is closed. If this isn’t the case, this may point to a water or energy ‘leak’ that can be easily fixed.

Why do you feel it’s important for businesses to become greener?

Going green saves money, which can then be spent better within the company. It is also good for a company’s image, because there are many individuals and organisations that are concerned about the environment and would prefer to work with a company that has considered and made attempts to address their environmental impacts.

If you could have any super power, what would you choose?

I’d want to be able to fly!
